Sandy's Canyon Trailhead

We're excited to once again announce another new location for our navigation fun in the Flagstaff area. On Saturday, September 19, we're offering two different courses starting at the Sandy's Canyon Trailhead, just 4.3 miles southeast of I-17 exit 339 on Lake Mary Road. For a shorter outing, we're offering a 2-hour course. Those looking for a longer challenge can choose the 4-hour option. Participants navigate to as many destinations as they can in the given time limit. There are no mandatory controls; you can find as many or as few markers as you can in the given time limit.

Our Sandy's Canyon Trailhead map is new to the club this year. The area is covered by an open ponderosa pine forest with substantial water drainages throughout. While none of the climbs are more than 50 or so meters, there are climbs and descents throughout the course. Unlike last month's event at Campbell Mesa, which was quite flat, visiting all the controls at our Sandy's Canyon event will certainly challenge your endurance.

The Sandy's Canyon Trailhead orienteering courses open at 8:00 AM. The last time to start a 4-hour course is 9:00 AM. The last time to start a 2-hour course is 11:00 AM. No water is available on the course, so we strongly recommend you bring your own water.

The Sandy's Canyon Trailhead is a great area to practice your navigation skills on excellent orienteering terrain. We look forward to seeing you at another new orienteering location for the club.

Note 1: Online signup is required. Our permit does not allow us to take money on-site. The donation pays for the map printing fee and insurance for the event.

All participants under age 18 are now required to have a signed parental consent form on file with the club. You can complete the form before the event and either scan it and send it to us by e-mail or bring it with you to the event.
