This month's desert course took place in a remote part of the Phoenix area, a site I visited for the first time for this event. Horseshoe Lake is no further away from Phoenix than Bartlett Lake, but a bumpy, 8-mile gravel road is a deterrent. In hindsight, we've missed one of the more beautiful sites around Phoenix. With a reservoir on the Verde River, and surrounded by mountains, we'd recommend a visit to Horseshoe Lake for anyone. We offered a shorter Score-O for the event, with controls placed to offer participants a view of the very unique walkway under the Horseshoe Dam spillway and a view on the cliffs overlooking the lake. Dan Yamashiro led the competition by visiting 14 of the 17 points in under two hours. We had out-of-town visitors join us for some navigation fun from Wisconsin (Charlie Shahbazian) and Ohio (Phillip Wadsworth). We're sure they enjoyed some navigation in the desert without all the trees to get in the way. Jeff Rockow and Team True North ignored the time limit and maximized their practice to find as many points as possible.
We look forward to offering more events in the scenic Verde Valley northeast of Phoenix. We hope you'll join us for another upcoming event.
